The Totem of the Future
1987 – 1989
The Totem of the Future is a monumental, entirely metal work that evolves through an infinity of shapes it has previously “learnt”. As the temperature changes with the nights, the days and the seasons, it constantly oscillates from one to another.
The studies, research and development for this sculpture were carried out by the Raychem group (California), the world leader in this technology. Its large-scale realisation was completed at the beginning of 1989, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Three years were needed to produce the first prototypes, at various scales ranging from 1.5 to 9 metres.
The Totem of the Future received the New Horizon Award, presented by the International Society for the Art, the Science and the Technology of Berkeley.
